SCOTUS seems unlikely to limit mifepristone access — but threats to women’s reproductive rights remain across the country

Now is not the time to relent - we must increase demands for action on reproductive freedom

Earlier this month, WoLF gathered women from across the country in New Mexico to discuss the threats facing us from both the left and right — and what to do about it. Top of mind amongst these threats is abortion access and the growing call to limit women’s reproductive rights. We also discussed the Alabama Supreme Court ruling on IVF and calls to ban birth control.

Now, we have learned that the Supreme Court appears unlikely to uphold a decision from the Fifth Circuit, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) v. the Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine (AHM), which would have limited access to mifepristone by setting a seven-week gestational limitation and requiring women to attend in-person office visits.

In oral arguments, even those justices who helped overturn Roe v. Wade seemed skeptical of the arguments for limiting the drug’s access.

Americans overwhelmingly support at least some access to abortion. Polling shows that only 13% of American voters support a total abortion ban, with the majority of Americans supporting abortion under some or all circumstances.

Still, threats to women’s reproductive sovereignty persist across the nation. Following the SCOTUS ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, 14 states have total bans on abortion, and seven others have severe limitations.

Abortion rights by state, as of March 26, 2024

There have been increasing attempts to criminalize women for abortions, including charging them with murder, and using technology to surveil women and create a culture of fear and censorship when talking about abortion.

Our Stance

WoLF stands unapologetically in support of women’s reproductive sovereignty. We remain one of the only organizations in the nation to side with women on all issues regardless of partisan or political divides.

Reproductive freedom includes, but is not limited to, women’s rights to abortion and birth control for any reason, and freedom from coerced sterilization, abortion, and birth control. We fight against surrogacy and the commodification of women’s reproductive systems. We promote the visibility of midwives and doulas, and we encourage women’s knowledge and self-care of their bodies; this includes promoting informed consent for women when they receive healthcare. We speak out against women’s mistreatment and lack of adequate treatment in healthcare systems.

In 2024, our goal is to push women to the FRONT of all conversations about sex-based rights! We must continue putting pressure on lawmakers, no matter their affiliation, to protect and restore the rights of women and girls at every level of government.
