Julia Beck Testifies to Congress: Gender Identity Undermines Women’s Space

Julia-VAWA-testimony-pic.png

Watch WoLF member Julia Beck testify to members of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security about the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) which Congress allowed to expire last December, 2018. Julia explains how the requirement to interpret sex as “gender identity” under VAWA has made it impossible to maintain women-only spaces for survivors of male violence to heal away from the threatening and re-traumatizing presence of men.

Unfortunately, instead of using the opportunity to ask Julia some important questions, several Democrats chose to grandstand and scold her. Several Republicans made insightful remarks and asked constructive questions to help expose how similar laws are already hurting women in states like California and Alaska, and other countries like the UK.

After you watch Julia’s testimony, if you have not yet done so please be sure to sign on to the Hands Across the Aisle petition to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), asking HUD to repeal its 2016 rule compelling HUD-funded emergency shelters and other services to house men who claim to be women in the few available women’s-only spaces. We will continue to press HUD to correct this harmful mistake.
