Reimagine Civilization

An Entry for WoLF’s Letters to Girls

By J.S.

Dear Girls Everywhere,
Reimagine Civilization
Patriarchy has invested centuries in preserving its authority—in our laws, religions, economies, political institutions, and even in the stories we tell about the creation of life.

Today, that struggle over power takes new forms.

Women's bodies and reproductive capacities are bought, sold, marketed, and exploited. Pornography, prostitution, trafficking, and commercial surrogacy raise profound questions about consent, coercion, economic power, and the commodification of female bodies.
Male violence remains a threat to women's freedom and safety.

And debates over gender identity have brought renewed attention to the meaning of sex-based rights, the protection of women's privacy, fairness in women's sports, and the importance of recognizing biological sex in law.

I want you to reimagine civilization.

Ask why our institutions reward domination more readily than care.
Ask why we measure economic success while ignoring so much of the labor that sustains human life.

Ask why we have learned to exploit the Earth rather than honor our place within it.
And ask what might change if the feminine creative power of the universe—the Creatress—were once again honored as sacred.

Remember that the commandment to “love your neighbor as yourself” includes your female neighbor.

A civilization cannot claim to honor humanity while subordinating half of it.

The Equal Rights Amendment is the constitutional expression of a fundamental truth: Women and men are citizens of equal stature—not the same, but equal under the law. Ratified by the requisite 38 states in 2020, the ERA remains at the center of the struggle to secure women's full constitutional equality. Its recognition, implementation, and enforcement are unfinished work.

But constitutional equality is the foundation, not the limit, of what you should imagine.
My generation fought to open doors.

Your generation must transform what lies beyond them.

You are not starting from nothing. There is ancient wisdom to recover, beauty to rediscover, and a living Earth that needs your courage.

Pick up the reins.

Not to replace one hierarchy with another, but to create a civilization grounded in equal stature, reverence, compassion, and responsibility for life.

Restore the female to the sacred.

Honor the living Earth.

Claim your equal citizenship.

And never forget: there is no wisdom without reverence.

With love and faith in your future,

Jean Sweeney
