WoLF Stands with Washington: Vote Yes on I-638

By: Jasmin Faulk, WoLF Executive Director

On Saturday, October 3, I was proud to represent the Women’s Liberation Front at the Stand 4 Girls’ Sports event in Vancouver, Washington, in support of Initiative 638.

WoLF Board Secretary Sherrie Taha also attended, and it was wonderful to connect with Washington residents, WoLF supporters, female athletes, lawmakers, and advocates who share our commitment to protecting women and girls. The event’s guest speaker, Jennifer Sey, founder and CEO of XX-XY Athletics, spoke about why fairness, safety, and female-only competition matter—not only in Washington, but across the country.

Five young women—Frances Staudt, Bailey Anderson, Sadie Sullivan, Alanna Smith, and Kendall Kotzmacher—shared deeply personal and painful accounts of competing against males during their high school athletic careers. They spoke about losing opportunities to win, facing unfair competition, and being denied privacy in female locker rooms. Their stories made clear that this issue is not abstract: it directly affects girls’ safety, dignity, and opportunity to compete fairly.

WoLF proudly supports I-638. The initiative would require policies prohibiting biologically male students from competing in female-only K–12 athletic competitions, helping preserve the purpose and integrity of girls’ sports.

Female athletic categories exist for a reason. They give girls a fair opportunity to compete, succeed, set records, earn scholarships, and experience the confidence and camaraderie that sports can provide. When sex is disregarded, those opportunities—and, in some sports, girls’ physical safety—are compromised. The safety and privacy of girls in locker rooms are also important considerations.

Supporting I-638 is not about denying anyone the opportunity to participate in athletics. It is about maintaining fair and meaningful competition for female students. Girls deserve athletic opportunities of their own, and their rights should not be treated as secondary.

We are grateful to Let’s Go Washington for bringing people together around this important issue, and to every athlete, parent, grandparent, and community member willing to stand up and speak out.

This November, WoLF encourages Washington voters to vote YES on I-638 and help protect fairness in girls’ sports.
