Win For Women! Nebraska Governor Signs Women’s Bill of Rights Executive Order
Co-authored by WoLF, the Women’s Bill of Rights defines sex in state laws based on biology
On Wednesday, Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen signed an executive order establishing the Women’s Bill of Rights, making Nebraska the fourth state in the nation to implement the Women’s Bill of Rights.
Earlier this month, Oklahoma became the first state to implement the Women’s Bill of Rights by executive order when it was signed by Governor Stitt. The bill was passed in Kansas with bipartisan support in April, and in Tennessee in May.
Co-authored by WoLF and Independent Women’s Voice (IWV), the Women’s Bill of Rights defines sex in state laws based on biology, codifies “intermediate scrutiny” to ensure that women are treated fairly by courts interpreting sex discrimination laws, and protects the ability to collect data on sex. Correct statistics are essential for providing accurate information to the public on the unique challenges facing women and girls. With many agencies and offices currently collecting data based on “gender identity,” the usefulness of such data for research into women's and girls' needs is neglected.
Terms like ‘woman’ and ‘mother’ were long thought to be well understood. Unfortunately, we apparently now need to codify these words into law so that women’s and girls’ sex-based rights will be protected. That is why we co-authored the Women’s Bill of Rights as model legislation. We hope to see it adopted across all states, as it’s the starting ground for future legislation to advance women’s and girls’ rights.
