2021 IN REVIEW: OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Undoubtedly, 2021 has been a pivotal year in the fight to protect and restore women’s civil rights. Since our founding in 2013, WoLF has grown through the grassroots support of brave, passionate women and generous donors.
This past year, your groundbreaking support helped WoLF achieve significant milestones. We strengthened our capacity to expand our nonpartisan efforts against common threats to sex-based rights. As 2022 draws near, WoLF invites you to celebrate our shared achievements in gratitude to the radical feminists who have paved the way for our continued efforts.
WoLF’s 2021 Accomplishments
Expanded Capacity for Litigation & Legal Advocacy Fights for Women and Children
LITIGATION
In November, WoLF filed a civil suit against the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation on behalf of four incarcerated women and the nonprofit organization, Woman II Woman. WoLF is suing the state for violating the constitutional rights of its female inmates to placate male fantasies of “gender identity” via transfer and housing in women’s prisons. WoLF is still awaiting the state’s response.
In April, WoLF fought the ACLU in court when it sought to quash a private citizen’s public records request related to women’s prisons. Despite the ACLU’s attempt to conceal sexual abuse by a trans-identified male, WoLF confirmed the prison employee’s whistleblower allegations.
AMICUS BRIEFS
WoLF published two amicus briefs defending the rights of women and girls in October and November. First, we submitted an amicus brief in the case of Green v. Miss United States of America to support women’s rights to free expressive association and free speech. Second, we submitted an amicus brief supporting the Arkansas SAFE Act to prohibit dangerous, irreversible medical procedures on gender non-conforming children.
Public TESTIMONY & LEGAL FILINGS
This year, WoLF provided public testimony in six states, a federal agency, and the Senate Judiciary Committee. In February, WoLF testified to support women’s sports bills introduced in the New Mexico and Kansas legislatures. In May, WoLF testified in opposition to a Louisiana bill that threatened to decriminalize the sexual exploitation industry. WoLF also testified in support of a Maine bill to protect single-sex homeless and domestic violence shelters in May.
Additionally, in February, WoLF submitted a rulemaking petition to the US Department of Education to affirm protections of women’s sports, single-sex spaces, and free speech. In March, WoLF joined with over 40 other organizations urging the UN to abandon its regressive ‘gender theory’ framework, which violates UN foundational documents and the rights of women and girls. Senator Grassley also asked WoLF to submit a statement for the record on the Equality Act to the Senate Judiciary Committee in March.
In June, WoLF testified in opposition to Biden’s Executive Order in a Title IX Rulemaking hearing hosted by the US Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights. In September, WoLF testified to the California Senate Rules Committee regarding SB 132 and urged the Committee to request the Inspector General to investigate conditions within California’s women’s prisons. As a result of this testimony and public outcry, the Office of the Inspector General has stated they intend to launch an investigation in early 2022.
Strengthening Support for Nonpartisan Gender Criticism Through Public Education
Throughout 2021, WoLF promoted critical thinking about gender ideology through public education efforts. In January, we hosted a volunteer-led webinar on radical feminist organizing in South Korea, and WoLF spoke about the future of women’s sports on The Daily Signal’s Problematic Women.
In February, WoLF published polls of likely voters in thirteen states on “gender identity” legislation issues. Despite the mainstream media’s bias on these issues, WoLF revealed that US voters largely disapprove of destroying women’s single-sex spaces. Also, WoLF shared its mission work on Feminist Current, The World and Everything in It, and more.
In March, WoLF published a series of articles on the Feminist Argument Against the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) and its shortcomings in the era of gender identity ideology. This series explains why WoLF advocates for “intermediate scrutiny” to recognize sex as a pre-condition of equal treatment.
In July, we discussed the disturbing impacts of transgender activism after a sex offender exposed himself to women and girls at a California spa. We also shared the anger and fear of a currently incarcerated California woman in a recorded phone call with our Legal Director in July.
In August, WoLF joined other radical feminist organizations to highlight the impacts of men transferring into Washington state women’s prisons. In October, WoLF co-hosted a webinar on women’s free speech after a radical feminist activist was cited for a ‘hate crime.’ WoLF also hosted its “Women Against Gender” public speaking event at the Austin Public Library in October. In November, we introduced you to one of the plaintiffs in Chandler v. CDCR, Tomiekia Johnson, who relies upon us to fight SB 132 from the outside. Finally, WoLF hosted a December Q&A webinar about Chandler v. CDCR to share WoLF’s legal expertise on the pending case.
Increased Opportunities for Our Supporters to Get Involved in the Fight for Sex-Based Rights
In March, WoLF published its Guide to Civic Engagement for its supporters looking to make a more significant impact on the policies that affect women and girls. Developed by WoLF volunteers, this essential resource is complete with downloadable templates to help concerned citizens influence US public policy.
This year, WoLF volunteers contributed over 60 hours submitting vital public records requests (FOIAs) that show the dangerous consequences of “gender identity” policies implemented by federal and state governments.
From April to December, WoLF hosted its Letters from the Front to break through the culture of silence surrounding the harms of gender identity ideology. Offering an anonymous outlet for women, we were humbled by 80+ submissions detailing the thoughts, traumas, and heartbreaks of women and girls impacted by this ‘progressive’ female erasure.
Throughout 2021, WoLF worked diligently to offer more opportunities to ‘Take Action!’ and you blew us away… In fifteen targeted actions, over 10,500 WoLF supporters sent 20,400+ letters to 680 different US lawmakers, elected officials, and key decision-makers urging them to protect and restore sex-based rights. Of these supporters, 60% were new to the WoLF community! Through four petitions, we garnered over 9,700 signatures supporting single-sex spaces and free speech—59% of those were signed by new WoLF supporters. Together, we send a poignant message to gender ideologists: Womanhood is not a costume, identity, or a feeling!
Dedicated A Professional Team of Women to Advance Our Mission
All of these 2021 accomplishments were made possible by the commitment of WoLF donors, volunteers, interns, concerned citizens, and WoLF’s first-ever full-time staff members. Despite our small size, the WoLF Team is building the capacity and sustainability to pursue our mission over the long term and continue fighting the erosion of sex-based rights. As the year comes to an end, will you consider making WoLF a part of your season of giving?
When you make a gift, you ensure WoLF’s capacity to protect and restore sex-based legal protections in education, employment, healthcare, and direct services that benefit women and girls. By making a gift before December 31, you gain a tax credit for the 2021 calendar year. Your donation today makes a difference in the lives of women and girls for years to come!
In these times of unprecedented threats to women’s progress, WoLF remains dedicated to the total liberation of women and girls. We are immensely grateful to all of the people who helped WoLF!
