Women’s Liberation Front in the News
Recent news has brought attention to several critical issues that WoLF has been actively addressing in 2024!
WoLF's diligent charitable work this year has profoundly impacted the preservation of sex-based rights and restoration of justice for women and girls. Through relentless advocacy and legal action, WoLF has remained at the forefront of the feminist fight for women's rights by confronting gender identity policies, compelled speech, and “gender affirmation” medical harms.
Women’s Prisons
Channel's Story: A documentary on IW Features covers the story of an incarcerated woman, Channel Johnson, who was manipulated into a sexual relationship by a trans-identified male prisoner. WoLF's advocacy for incarcerated women sheds light on such cases and stresses the importance of protecting women in vulnerable situations:
Two years ago, Johnson was approached by Lauren Bone, the legal director of Women’s Liberation Front (WoLF). Back in 2021, Bone filed a lawsuit on behalf of female inmates against the state of California to attempt to overturn SB 132.
Johnson said she wasn’t ready to speak out at that time because fellow inmates were shaming her for reporting Robertson’s behavior. But soon afterward, Johnson learned that another female inmate had been allegedly sexually manipulated by Robertson.
Johnson then realized she wanted to be a voice for all women, who deserve to be safe behind bars and not have to “endure the heartache and headache” that too many incarcerated women have already experienced at the hands of manipulative men. [...]
Earlier this summer, WoLF filed an amended complaint, adding two new plaintiffs. The case is currently awaiting a response from California and the ACLU.
So in 2024, Johnson joined WoLF’s lawsuit as one of four plaintiffs.
“My goal is for people to hear our voice,” Johnson said.

Gender Identity Ideology
Compelled Speech in Court: In California, a district attorney was ordered to refer to a male rapist using female pronouns in court. This case has sparked controversy and discussions about compelled speech in the legal sphere, as recently covered by several news media outlets. WoLF's efforts to protect free speech highlight the absurdity of such mandates and the need to maintain the integrity of women's sex-based rights:
The Post Millennial:
51-year-old Tremaine Carroll, a biological male who identifies as female was incarcerated in a women’s prison. He has been charged for allegedly raping women in prison and is facing charges including two felony counts of forcible rape and one count of dissuading a witness, he was removed from the women's prison. […]
According to the Women's Liberation Front (WoLF), Carroll was the public face of California’s Senate Bill 132, the “Transgender Respect, Agency, and Dignity Act,” which was introduced by radical Democratic state Sen. Scott Wiener and signed into law in 2020 by Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom. The bill allows transgender prisoners to be housed in a facility consistent with their gender identity who “self-identify” as women or non-binary, allowing men to be placed in female prisons, despite their surgical status. [...]
The policy that allows men to be placed in women's prisons is being challenged by four women who are in the same prison as Carroll, Janine Chandler, Krystal Gonzales, Tomiekia Johnson, and Nadia Romero, who are represented by the Women’s Liberation Front.

Just The News:
The lawyer for California inmate Carroll – who also goes by "Tremayne" and was transferred back to men's prison following the charges – urged Judge Katherine Rigby at a July preliminary hearing to force Madera County Supervising Deputy District Attorney Eric DuTemple to use Carroll's preferred pronouns, according to WoLF, whose leaders attended the hearing.
DuTemple objected in a brief requested by Rigby, who denied the motion to use male pronouns for Carroll on Dec. 16, WoLF said. It told Just the News it requested the hearing transcript to document the order, which is not formalized in the online court system for that day's hearing, which concerned Carroll's so-called 995 motion.
Carroll's next "parole suitability hearing" is tentatively scheduled for January.
WoLF expects the ACLU, which successfully represented Carroll in a motion to intervene in WoLF's challenge to SB 132 on behalf of female inmates, to demand the same compelled pronoun use, since the ACLU has convinced courts to do so in "at least two other cases that relate to sex discrimination," WoLF said.
Such mandates make it "more difficult and perilous" for lawyers to advocate "zealously" for clients and "more traumatic and fraught" for witnesses and victims, the gender-critical group said, and also "falsely increase statistics on sexual victimization against those who claim to be transgender while incarcerated."
WoLF said that's why it has fought state implementations of the American Bar Association's Model Rule 8.4(g), a sort of speech code for lawyers in settings "related to the practice of law" and the subject of a failed Supreme Court petition this year.

“Gender Affirmation” and Children's Health: The Christian Post discusses the ongoing debate over the use of puberty blockers for children, highlighting concerns about the long-term effects and the role of gender identity in medical decisions. Brandon Showalter points out the inconsistent and poor journalistic integrity of the Washington Post over the years. WoLF's involvement in the issues around child “gender affirmation” emphasizes the need for coalition-building to urge cautious and informed approaches to children's health:
“Start thinking of an excuse why you supported sterilizing children.”
The meme’s background is a pink and blue transgender banner, and its terse message reminds those who supported so-called “gender-affirming care” that the ugly truth will one day be so undeniable as to be inexcusable, even for the most die-hard believers. By the looks of it, some prominent media outlets are slyly starting to memory-hole that enthusiastic support as the ghastly reality of child sterilization and other serious long-term repercussions via this “care” surfaces more widely.
None other than The Washington Post now appears to be backpedaling.
In an Editorial Board column published Sunday, the prominent newspaper’s editors are furrowing their brows as ultra-concerned arbiters of truth and supposed defenders against democracy dying in darkness. They are admitting that the state of Tennessee — at the center of U.S. v. Skrmetti at the Supreme Court on Dec 4 — has legitimate worries about puberty-blocking drugs and cross-sex hormones, and it has legal room to prohibit them for minors, as approximately half the US states have done. [...]
Consider apologizing to the American College of Pediatricians for your hit piece that you published in June of last year, and for this similarly dishonest 2020 article characterizing the radical feminist Women’s Liberation Front as “right-wing” (they are not). [...]
If you start doing good journalism along these lines, maybe you will earn back the public trust. Until then, it seems you’d rather have us believe that you want to see scientific integrity and more caution with these experimental medical practices and that you have never thought otherwise.

Women’s Sports
Biden Administration's Title IX Changes: Campus Reform explores the Biden administration’s recently withdrawn proposed Title IX rule that would have allowed boys identifying as girls to compete in girls' sports. This decision came after significant public backlash and multiple lawsuits challenging the rule. WoLF has been vocal in opposing these changes since 2021, arguing that they undermine sex-based protections and fairness in women's sports:
The proposed Title IX changes faced opposition as far back as 2021. One female student athlete said that being made to face male opponents “shattered” her chances of victory, and said it was “frustrating, heartbreaking, and demoralizing.” Lauren Adams of the Women’s Liberation Front said that male participation in women’s sports “denies the reality of differences when they exist and are relevant between the sexes.”
