The Night He Tried to Kill Me
One night half a century ago when I was a 20-year-old college student, I decided the time had come for me to break up with my boyfriend. I didn't expect any trouble. After all, a couple of months earlier, he told me we should start seeing other people, and I agreed. So I called him on the phone and broke the news to him as gently as I could.
Ten minutes later, there was a knock at my door. It was my boyfriend. I didn't expect any trouble. After all, in a few weeks, he was heading to Harvard University to begin law school. I let him in. We sat and talked for five strained minutes. I told him I was very sorry, but our relationship was over. And there was nothing he could say to change my mind. He rose from his chair and approached me. I rose from my chair, thinking he was going to give me one last hug and say goodbye.
Instead, he placed his hands around my neck and began to choke me. It was the very last thing I expected. After all, in the two years, I had dated him he had never been violent. I struggled to breathe but couldn't get air into my lungs. And I realized that if he didn't release his fingers from my neck, I would soon die. After a few tense seconds, he dropped his hands, and I filled my lungs with air. Then, he fled from the room, and I never saw him again.
I tell this disturbing story to underline the fact we all know well. Biological men have a clear and obvious physical advantage over biological women. Men are taller and stronger with greater upper body strength, muscle mass, and bone density. The average man can easily overpower most women. And if a man with a bright future, could try to kill the woman he claimed he loved, what's to stop a violent male inmate from killing his female cellmate?
A few months ago, I first learned about California's SB132, the law that allows any male inmate to self-identify as a "woman" and transfer into a women's prison where he will be locked into a cell with a female inmate. I immediately thought about my own ordeal so long ago. And I felt sick to my stomach. Any rational adult knows there are only two sexes of human beings, males and females. No biological male inmate, regardless of the "gender" he claims to be, regardless of the hormones he takes or doesn't take or the surgeries he's had or hasn't had, should ever be transferred into a women's prison. No male inmate should ever be placed inside a locked cell with a biological woman whom he can beat, rape, or murder.
We must never sacrifice the lives of biological women, not even a single incarcerated woman, to satisfy the outrageous demands of the smallest subgroup of biological men. The stakes are too high. Keep biological men out of women's prisons. Keep incarcerated women safe and alive. Keep prisons single-sex.
